Massachusetts sits at the northern end of the busiest car shipping corridor in the country, and that shapes everything about shipping from here. Southbound carriers begin their Florida runs in New England, loading in Boston, the Route 128 suburbs, Worcester and on the Cape before working down through Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York. Because the truck fills as it goes, a Massachusetts pickup is one of the first stops and is priced for the full distance; on the same lane it runs about $100–$150 above a New York pickup.
The traffic is seasonal and academic. Snowbirds from the South Shore, Cape Cod and the western suburbs ship to Florida from October to December and return in spring. September and January bring a surge of inbound student cars for the Boston and Cambridge universities, with the reverse in May. Corporate relocations, particularly to Texas, the Carolinas and North Carolina's Research Triangle, run through the summer, and a steady trade in vehicles moves through the Port of Boston.
Three roads carry it all: I-95 south through Providence and toward New York, I-90 west across the state to Albany and the Midwest, and I-93 north–south through the city. I-495 is the outer loop where many carriers gather loads. This page covers what it costs to ship into and out of Massachusetts on the main lanes, the seasonal calendar, the Boston city guide, and the practical questions: Boston streets, the Cape, winter storms and student timing.

After delivery
The paperwork Massachusetts asks of a new resident, so you can book the DMV visit for the week the car lands rather than discover it at the counter.
Register as soon as you become a Massachusetts resident; the RMV gives no grace period.
No separate VIN verification for a titled vehicle; the Registration and Title Application must be stamped by a Massachusetts insurance agent.
A Massachusetts safety and emissions inspection is required within 7 days of registration, at any licensed inspection station.
Massachusetts insurance is required before the RMV will register the car.

Boston's oldest neighbourhoods were laid out before cars existed, and a 75-foot hauler cannot enter them. Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the North End, the South End and most of Cambridge and Somerville are pickups by meeting point: a lot off I-93 in Dorchester or Quincy, the retail strips on Route 1 in Revere and Saugus, or a commuter rail park-and-ride. Drivers propose the spot the day before, and if the car lives in a garage you or a friend drive it there. Inside Route 128 the picture varies street by street; beyond it, in Framingham, Andover, Lexington or Hingham, driveway pickups are routine.
Cape Cod ships in volume every autumn. Drivers run Route 6 regularly from late September, but summer weekend traffic at the Sagamore and Bourne bridges means a meeting point near the bridges is often the practical choice in July and August. Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket cars are met on the mainland at Woods Hole or Hyannis after the ferry, which the owner arranges.
Winter is the main scheduling risk. Nor'easters between December and March can close I-90 across the state and slow I-95 for a day or two, and carriers wait out the storm rather than load in it; nothing is charged for the delay. Parking bans during snow emergencies also affect where a truck can stop in the city. September is easy weather but the busiest inbound month for student cars, so book two to three weeks ahead for a delivery near a campus.
Paperwork is keys and a photo ID at pickup and the receiver's name and phone number at delivery. Massachusetts requires no state form to ship a vehicle in or out, though a car arriving to be registered here needs a Massachusetts inspection within seven days of registration, which is unrelated to the shipment. Remove the toll transponder before the car loads.

888-706-8784$1,000–$1,450 for a running sedan on an open carrier to Florida, $1,100–$1,550 to Texas, $650–$950 to the Carolinas or Georgia and $1,550–$2,100 to California. Inbound is similar. Enclosed adds 40–60%.
Distance and position. Boston is 200 miles further from Florida than New York and sits at the top of the I-95 corridor, so southbound trucks fill up before they leave the region. Prices are about $100–$150 above New York on the same lanes.
Four to six days on the truck to Florida, four to six to Texas, two to three to the Mid-Atlantic, seven to ten to California. Add one to five days for carrier assignment and pickup.
Not in Back Bay, Beacon Hill, the North End or most of Cambridge. Drivers meet Boston customers at a lot near I-93 or the Mass Pike, along Route 1 in Revere or Saugus, or at a commuter rail park-and-ride. Suburbs inside Route 128 vary; beyond it, driveway pickups are the norm.
The Cape is served regularly and adds $50–$100 for the extra distance; drivers often meet at a lot near the bridges in summer traffic. Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket require the ferry, and the car is met on the mainland side.
February through April for southbound shipments, once the snowbird rush has passed. Mid-October to early January is the most expensive window, and September is busy with student arrivals in the opposite direction.
Nor'easters from December through March can hold a pickup by a day or two, and I-90 across the state occasionally closes in storms. Carriers wait it out at no charge and keep you informed.
Carriers run I-90 (Mass Pike) and I-93 daily. Tell us the route and vehicle and a specialist will confirm the price and the earliest pickup.
