Shipping a car to or from Michigan: the I-75 lane and the Motor City

Michigan has two things going for it as a shipping origin. The first is I-75, which runs from the Mackinac Bridge through Detroit and straight down to Florida's Gulf Coast without a change of road: Detroit to Tampa is one interstate, three to five days, and the corridor is busy every autumn with snowbirds heading for Fort Myers, Naples and Sarasota. The second is Detroit itself. The manufacturer, dealer and auction traffic around the city keeps carriers in the area year-round, so a pickup in Oakland, Macomb or Wayne County is assigned quickly at a competitive price.

The seasonal pattern mirrors Illinois: October through December southbound to Florida and, in smaller numbers, to Arizona via I-94, I-55, I-40 and I-17; March through May northbound. Summer brings relocations to Texas, the Carolinas and the Southeast, and August and January bring university traffic for Ann Arbor, East Lansing and Kalamazoo. Inbound shipments follow the same lanes.

Distance within the state matters. Detroit, Ann Arbor, Lansing and Flint sit on the main corridors and price the same; Grand Rapids and the west side are served on I-96 and I-196 at a small premium; northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula are a detour for carriers and are usually served by meeting a truck further south. This page covers costs on the main lanes, the routes, the Detroit and Grand Rapids guides, and the local details.

Delivering in Michigan: the suburbs, the west side, the north and the snow

Metro Detroit is one of the easier big cities for a car hauler. The suburbs of Oakland and Macomb Counties, Dearborn, the Downriver communities and the Ann Arbor area have wide streets and long driveways, and drivers routinely load at the address. Downtown Detroit, Midtown and the dense inner neighbourhoods are the exception, with a meeting point near I-75, I-94 or the Lodge the usual answer. Dealer and auction pickups around the metro are a large share of Michigan shipments and are scheduled inside the seller's business hours.

Grand Rapids is served regularly on I-96 and I-196, with pickups in the city and the lakeshore towns adding $50–$100 and sometimes a day against Detroit. Kalamazoo and Battle Creek on I-94 price closer to Detroit. Further north the network thins out: Traverse City, Petoskey and the Upper Peninsula are quoted individually, and many customers choose to meet a truck in Grand Rapids, Bay City or Green Bay to keep the price and the pickup date predictable.

Winter is the real constraint. From December through March, lake-effect snow on the west side and storms across I-94 and I-75 can hold a truck for a day or two, and the Mackinac Bridge closes to high-profile vehicles in high winds. Carriers wait out closures at no charge. Most snowbird shipments leave in October and November, ahead of the worst of it; spring returns in April are usually clear.

Paperwork is keys and a photo ID at pickup and the receiver's details at delivery. Michigan requires no state form to ship a vehicle in or out, and a Michigan title is not needed for a domestic shipment. Leave the tank at a quarter, take belongings out, and in winter make sure the car starts on the morning of pickup.
