Ohio to Florida: a short lane with a lot of trucks

Ohio is the closest big Midwestern state to Florida, and it shows in the price and the timeline. At about 1,050 miles from Cincinnati or Columbus to the Gulf Coast, it is a three-day drive for a car hauler and one of the cheaper snowbird lanes in the country. It is also one of the best served: trucks from Michigan run through Ohio on I-75, trucks from Pittsburgh and Cleveland run I-77, and Columbus sits between them on I-71, so a car in any of the three metros is on a truck within a few days.

Ohio's winter residents split between the Gulf Coast, Fort Myers, Naples, Sarasota and Bradenton, and central Florida around Orlando and The Villages, with a smaller flow to the Atlantic side. This page covers the three metros and the rest of the state, with the routing differences that affect which coast the truck reaches first. The quote form above is set to the lane; add your vehicle for a range.

The Ohio calendar

Southbound demand builds from early October and peaks in November and December, when most of the state's snowbirds leave in the same three weeks. A shipment booked at short notice then pays the top of the range and a fixed single date adds to it. Two to three weeks of lead time and a three-day window are what bring the price down.

Late February through April is the cheapest southbound time, with trucks running down to collect the spring return. Summer is steady with relocations and university traffic. Weather is a milder factor than further north, but a January ice storm on I-71 or I-77 can still hold a pickup by a day.

Two ways south

From Cincinnati and Dayton the truck is on I-75 already and runs it through Lexington, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Atlanta into Florida on the Gulf side. From Columbus it is I-71 to Cincinnati or I-71 to Louisville and I-65 to Nashville, then I-24 and I-75. From Cleveland, Akron and Canton, many drivers take I-77 south through West Virginia and the Carolinas to I-95 and arrive on the Atlantic side at Jacksonville. Drivers cover 450 to 550 miles a day, so Florida deliveries begin on the third day.

Which coast comes first

I-75 trucks reach Tampa, Sarasota, Fort Myers and Naples first and Orlando by a short detour. I-77 trucks reach Jacksonville, Daytona and the Atlantic coast first, with Orlando next. If your destination is on the far side from your truck's route, expect the delivery a day later.

Preparing the car

A key, a quarter tank, the E-ZPass out of the windshield, belongings under about 100 pounds and uninsured. Photograph every panel and the odometer before the truck arrives and keep your copy of the bill of lading for delivery.

Open vs enclosed

Open or enclosed from Ohio to Florida?

Ohio salts its interstates from December through March, and the run through Kentucky and Tennessee is much the same. A convertible, a classic or a car with fresh paint making a midwinter trip is the case for enclosed transport at 40 to 60 percent more. A daily driver ships open, as nearly everyone on this lane does, and a wash in Florida takes care of the road.

Pickup across Ohio, delivery in Florida

Cincinnati's suburbs, West Chester, Mason, Blue Ash, Anderson and across the river into northern Kentucky, are direct to the door. Over-the-Rhine, Hyde Park's narrower streets and Clifton usually mean a lot on a main road. Columbus is easy: Dublin, Westerville, Upper Arlington, Hilliard and Grove City all take a truck at the door, while German Village, the Short North and Clintonville mean a meeting point off I-71 or I-270. Cleveland's east and west suburbs are simple; Ohio City, Tremont and Lakewood's side streets are not, and the driver will suggest a lot near I-90 or I-480.

Dayton, Toledo, Akron, Canton and Youngstown are collected weekly. The Toledo pickups often share a truck with Michigan cars; Youngstown with Pittsburgh. Athens, Zanesville and the Appalachian counties take a few days longer to assign and a meeting point on I-70 or US-33 helps.

In Florida, the Gulf Coast communities Ohioans favor are largely gated: Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Sarasota and Bradenton. The driver meets you at the visitor gate or a plaza outside and you drive the last stretch. The Villages and the bigger Orlando developments are the same. None of this changes the price.

Nothing but a key and a photo ID is needed at pickup. No title, and no lender permission for a financed car within the country. If the car is coming from a dealer or an auction in Ohio, tell your specialist and the pickup will be arranged around the seller's hours.

After delivery

Registering a car after it arrives in Florida

Shipping to Florida: the paperwork Florida asks of a new resident, so you can book the DMV visit for the week the car lands rather than discover it at the counter.

  • Registration deadline

Register within 30 days of establishing residency, taking a job or enrolling children in school.

  • VIN verification

VIN and odometer verification is required for a vehicle titled out of state (form HSMV 82042), completed by a law-enforcement officer, a licensed Florida dealer or a notary; it can be done before the car ships or after it arrives.

  • Inspections

No periodic safety or emissions inspection.

  • Also worth knowing

Proof of Florida insurance is required before the county tax collector will register the car. Bring the out-of-state title.
