Boston is the biggest car-shipping origin in New England and one of the more awkward cities in the country for a 75-foot truck. Beacon Hill, the North End, Back Bay, the South End, Cambridge, Somerville and the narrower streets of Brookline have no room for a car hauler to stop, so a Boston-proper shipment starts with the driver's call the day before and a meeting point on a wide artery or at a lot on Route 1, I-93 or off 128. The suburbs, inside and outside the beltway, are driveway pickups, and the yards in Saugus, Woburn and Dedham load for the Florida and cross-country lanes weekly.
The customers are New England's snowbirds bound for Naples, the Palm Beaches, Boca and Sarasota every fall; relocations to and from the biotech, finance and university employers; the largest student shipping calendar in the country every late August and May; and buyers collecting cars from the dealer rows on Route 1 and Route 9 for garages elsewhere. It is the longest of the Northeast-to-Florida lanes at four to six days, and priced a step above New York for it. The quote form above is set to Boston; add the other end of the trip and your vehicle for a range.

The suburbs are driveway pickups. Newton's wider streets, Wellesley, Needham, Dedham, Lexington, Winchester, Belmont's flats, Arlington's wider streets, Milton, Quincy's newer neighborhoods, Braintree, Hingham, Norwell, Weymouth, Burlington, Woburn, Reading, Lynnfield, Peabody and Danvers take a truck wherever the street lets it turn without reversing and the snowbanks allow. The Metrowest towns from Natick to Framingham and Sudbury are the same.
The city and the inner ring are meeting points. Boston proper, including the Seaport's towers, uses a garage exit or the wider Seaport streets near the convention center; Back Bay, the South End, Beacon Hill and the North End use the Route 1 lots in Saugus for the north side or the I-93 lots in Braintree for the south. Cambridge and Somerville use the lots along I-93 in Medford or the Fresh Pond area. Brookline's narrower streets use the Route 9 lots in Chestnut Hill. Jamaica Plain, Dorchester, Roslindale and West Roxbury sometimes take a truck on the wider streets; the driver decides the day before. Logan's hotel lots on Route 1A are the usual airport handover.
Winter is the season's fact. A nor'easter from December through March can hold a pickup a day or two while streets are cleared, and carriers wait at no charge. Have the driveway cleared, start the car that morning so it loads under its own power, and if your street is not plowed, meet the driver on a main road. A car that will not start in the cold becomes a winch job and a surcharge.
Before the truck comes: pull the Fast Lane transponder so the Pike and I-95 gantries do not bill it, keep anything in the car to a small bag in the trunk, and photograph every panel in daylight. The driver wants one key and a look at a photo ID. Your title stays home, and a lease or loan does not need anyone's sign-off to cross a state line.

Loads for Florida and the West build in Saugus, Woburn and Dedham, so we schedule a Boston-area pickup as a stop on a departing load and quote the window that goes with it, even in the November rush.
Late August and May are the tightest weeks in the metro. If your dates fall in them your specialist says so at the first call and asks you to book three weeks ahead, rather than leaving you to find out at the curb.
The driver names a spot on Route 1, along I-93 or in the Seaport when the truck is assigned, chosen to avoid the hours when the Pike and the Expressway crawl, and confirms the hour the day before.
