Car shipping in Grand Rapids: West Michigan's own route south

Grand Rapids is far enough from Detroit that its cars often do not go there. West Michigan's snowbirds bound for Fort Myers, Naples, Tampa and Phoenix each fall are collected by carriers who cover the west side of the state and who route down US-131 to I-94 and I-65 through Indianapolis and Nashville, or across I-96 to join the Detroit loads on I-75, whichever fills the truck. It is a day longer than a Detroit pickup and priced a step higher, and the yards along US-131 and I-96 turn some loads around locally.

The rest of the traffic is relocations to the medical mile and the region's manufacturers, students at Grand Valley and Calvin every August and May, the lakeshore's seasonal residents in Holland, Saugatuck and Grand Haven, and the furniture and auto suppliers' corporate transfers. The suburbs and the newer townships are easy for a truck; the older neighborhoods near downtown are meeting points, and lake-effect snow is the winter fact. The quote form above is set to Grand Rapids; add the other end of the trip and your vehicle for a range.

Pickup and delivery around Grand Rapids and the lakeshore

The suburbs and townships are driveway pickups. Ada, Cascade, Forest Hills, East Grand Rapids' wider streets, Kentwood, Wyoming, Grandville, Jenison, Hudsonville, Georgetown, Rockford, Byron Center, Caledonia, Lowell and Sparta take a 75-foot truck wherever the street lets it turn without reversing and the snow allows. Gated communities are few; where they exist, the driver meets you at the gate.

The older city is a meeting point. Heritage Hill, East Hills, Eastown, Midtown, the West Side and downtown have narrow streets, mature trees and parked cars, and the driver names a big-box lot on 28th Street, Alpine Avenue, the Beltline or near the US-131 exits. Gerald R. Ford International's hotel lots on 28th Street and Patterson are the usual handover for anyone flying the same day.

The lakeshore is collected on the way. Holland, Zeeland and Muskegon are on US-31 and served regularly; Grand Haven, Saugatuck and the cottage communities along the lake add a meeting point on the highway because the beach roads are narrow and, in summer, full. Kalamazoo is collected on US-131 by the same trucks.

West Michigan winter is heavier than Detroit's. The lake-effect bands that bury Grand Haven and Muskegon reach Grand Rapids often enough that a pickup between November and March can slide a day or two, at no cost to you. Your part is a cleared driveway and a car that fires on the first try; if the plow has not reached your street, the driver will suggest a main road.

Twenty minutes at the curb covers the rest: one key, a glance at your ID, the inspection sheet walked together, and the load. Take your own photographs before the truck arrives, and keep the trunk close to empty because personal items ride uninsured. Nobody needs the title, and a leased or financed car crosses state lines on your say-so alone.

Why AutoShippingUS

Why Grand Rapids drivers choose AutoShippingUS

  • Assigned to carriers that cover the west side

We assign West Michigan pickups to carriers working Grand Rapids, Holland and Kalamazoo on the same round rather than sending a Detroit truck out and back, which is what keeps the window at days rather than a week.

  • Both routes south, explained at assignment

US-131 to I-65 or I-96 to I-75: your specialist tells you which the driver is running and the Gulf Coast window that goes with it.

  • Lake-effect scheduling

From November to March your specialist checks the lakeshore forecast against your window. If a band is coming through, you hear about it before the driver is stuck on US-131, and rescheduling costs nothing.
