Car shipping in Chicago: the Midwest's crossroads

Every car hauler working the Midwest passes through Chicago. I-65 runs southeast to Florida, I-55 and I-44 run southwest to Arizona and Texas, I-80 and I-90 run east to the coast and west to Denver and beyond, and I-94 brings Minnesota and Wisconsin cars in to join the loads. The yards in Bedford Park, Bolingbrook and along I-294 turn trucks around every day, which is why a Chicago pickup is typically assigned within a day or two in any month and priced at the low end of the Midwest ranges on every lane.

Two winters drive the volume, Florida's and Arizona's, from early October through December and back from mid-March through May. Relocations to and from the Loop and the suburban corporate campuses, students at the city's universities every August and May, coast-to-coast moves, and the auction lanes in the western suburbs that supply dealers across the Midwest fill in the rest. The suburbs are easy for a truck; the city's North Side and the Loop are meeting points. The quote form above is set to Chicago; add the other end of the trip and your vehicle for a range.

Pickup and delivery across Chicagoland

The suburbs are driveway pickups. Naperville, Aurora, Wheaton, Downers Grove, Oak Brook, Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Palatine, Elgin, Orland Park, Tinley Park, Homer Glen, Joliet, Evanston's wider streets, Wilmette, Winnetka, Glenview, Northbrook, Deerfield and Highland Park take a 75-foot truck wherever the street lets it turn without reversing and the snow allows. Gated communities are few; where they exist, the driver meets you at the gate.

The city is mostly a meeting point. The Loop, River North, Streeterville and the Gold Coast use a garage exit at buildings that allow it or a lot on Clybourn or near the Kennedy. Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square, Ukrainian Village and the North Side lakefront have parked cars, alleys and no room to turn, and the driver names a big-box lot along the Kennedy, the Edens or on Elston. The Southwest Side, Beverly and Mount Greenwood use the Cicero Avenue and Stevenson lots near Midway. Hyde Park and the South Side lakefront use the lots off the Dan Ryan. O'Hare's hotel lots on Mannheim Road and Midway's on Cicero are the usual airport handovers.

Winter is the season's fact. Lake-effect snow off the lake, a polar cold snap that drops the region below zero, and the Kennedy and the Dan Ryan at rush hour are what drivers plan around. Snow can hold a pickup a day or two and carriers wait at no charge. Start the car that morning so it loads under its own power, clear the driveway, and meet on a plowed main road if yours is not done.

Before the truck comes: pull the I-PASS so the tollway gantries do not bill it, keep anything in the car to a small bag in the trunk, and photograph every panel in daylight. The driver wants one key and a look at a photo ID. Your title stays home, and a lease or loan does not need anyone's sign-off to cross a state line.

Why AutoShippingUS

Why Chicago drivers choose AutoShippingUS

  • Every lane starts here

Florida, Arizona, Texas and both coasts load out of Chicago, and the Bedford Park and Bolingbrook yards turn trucks around daily. We schedule a metro pickup as a stop on a departing load and quote the short window that goes with it.

  • A North Side or Loop handover named in advance

The driver names a lot on Clybourn, along the Kennedy or the Edens, or near Midway when the truck is assigned, chosen to avoid the hours when the expressways crawl, and confirms the hour the day before.

  • Cold-weather pickups done right

From November to March your specialist reminds you to start the car and clear the drive, and checks the forecast so a lake-effect band does not catch the driver on the Edens.
