Car shipping in Jersey City: towers, garages and the Route 440 lots

Jersey City is a city of garages. The waterfront towers along the Hudson, the new buildings around Journal Square and the brownstone blocks of downtown all keep their cars underground or on narrow streets, and a 75-foot car hauler cannot stop at any of them. So a Jersey City shipment is a garage exit or a meeting point: the Liberty State Park lots, the big-box lots on Route 440, the wider streets of the Newport and Harborside area, or a lot in Kearny next to the yards. Drivers who work Hudson County have a spot for every building.

The trade-off is speed and price. The Kearny and Bayonne yards are ten to fifteen minutes away, trucks load for I-95 south every morning, and a pickup is typically assigned within a day or two at a price a step below Manhattan. Many Manhattan customers hand over here for that reason, ten minutes through the Holland Tunnel. The customers are relocations to and from the financial employers on the waterfront, students at Saint Peter's and NJCU, Hudson County's snowbirds, and buyers moving cars through the port-area dealers. The quote form above is set to Jersey City; add the other end of the trip and your vehicle for a range.

Pickup and delivery in Hudson County

Downtown and the waterfront are garage exits and meeting points. A building garage with a wide curb on Washington Boulevard, Marin Boulevard or Grand Street sometimes works if the attendant agrees; otherwise the driver names the Liberty State Park lots off Jersey Avenue, the Newport area's wider streets, or the big-box lots on Route 440 near the Hudson Mall. Journal Square, the Heights, Bergen-Lafayette and Greenville use the Route 440 lots or the wider blocks of Kennedy Boulevard. Hoboken is always a meeting point, usually near the light rail or the waterfront lots. Bayonne's wider streets sometimes take a truck directly; the driver decides the day before. Union City, West New York and Weehawken use lots in North Bergen or on the Boulevard East side.

Garage attendants are the usual receivers. Many building garages will walk the inspection and sign the bill of lading if asked in advance; otherwise name a friend or family member, give them the driver's number and your pickup photos, and make sure they have an hour on the delivery day. Newark airport's hotel lots on Route 1 and 9 are fifteen minutes away and the usual airport handover.

Drivers pick hours to avoid the tunnel approaches at rush hour and the street-cleaning windows downtown, and confirm both in the call the day before. A nor'easter from December through March can hold a pickup a day; carriers wait and nothing is charged.

Before the truck comes: pull the E-ZPass so the gantries do not bill it, keep anything in the car to a small bag in the trunk, and photograph every panel in daylight, which in a garage means driving it out first. The driver wants one key and a look at a photo ID. Your title stays home, and a lease or loan does not need anyone's sign-off to cross a state line.

Why AutoShippingUS

Why Jersey City drivers choose AutoShippingUS

  • A meeting point named for the building

A hauler cannot stop on most Hudson County streets, so the handover is at Liberty State Park, on Route 440 or at the Newport garages. You are told the spot, the hour and the driver's number when the truck is assigned.

  • Ten minutes from the yards, ten from Manhattan

Loads build in Kearny and Bayonne every morning and the Holland Tunnel puts downtown Manhattan next door. We schedule a Jersey City pickup as a stop on a departing load and price it as New Jersey rather than New York.

  • Garage handovers arranged in advance

Most Hudson County cars are handed over by an attendant or a neighbor. Your specialist sets it up at booking, with the pickup photos and the paperwork in the right hands before the truck arrives.
