Car shipping in San Antonio: Military City USA

No city in the country ships more cars on military orders than San Antonio. Joint Base San Antonio, with Lackland, Randolph and Fort Sam Houston, moves families in and out every week of the year, and the summer PCS season is the busiest stretch on the calendar. Add the city's position where I-10 and I-35 cross, which puts it on the California, Florida and Dallas lanes, and the carrier yards along I-10 West and I-35 North, and a pickup here is typically assigned within one to three days in any month.

The rest of the traffic is relocations to the medical center and the north side's employers, students at UTSA and Trinity, retirees to the Hill Country, and a busy dealer and auction trade. The city's newer developments are wide and easy for a truck; the older neighborhoods near downtown and the bases' gates are the two things that need arranging. The quote form above is set to San Antonio; add the other end of the trip and your vehicle for a range.

Pickup and delivery around San Antonio

The north side and the suburbs are driveway pickups. Stone Oak, Alamo Ranch, Helotes, the Dominion, Shavano Park, Schertz, Cibolo, Universal City, Converse, Boerne, Bulverde and New Braunfels take a 75-foot truck wherever the street lets it turn without reversing. Gated communities are common and admit a delivery truck with a call from the resident, or the driver meets you at the nearest plaza; it does not change the price.

The installations set their own rules. Carriers do not enter Lackland, Randolph or Fort Sam Houston. The driver meets you at a lot outside the gate, usually a big-box parking lot on the nearest arterial, or at your off-base address, and your specialist confirms the spot when the truck is assigned. PCS shipments are frequent enough that drivers know every gate. Tell your specialist the report date and it goes on the booking; if orders change, dates move without charge until a carrier is dispatched.

Near downtown, the driver names a meeting point. King William, Monte Vista, Alamo Heights' narrower streets, the Pearl and the River Walk area have no room for a hauler, and the regular spots are lots off I-10, 281 and Loop 410. San Antonio International's hotel lots on the 410 frontage are the usual handover for anyone flying the same day.

Belongings stay under about 100 pounds, below the window line, uninsured; on a PCS move the household goods shipment takes the boxes. Base decals and gate passes come off before pickup. A car arriving from another state needs Texas registration and a state inspection afterwards, which are your errand and not the carrier's.

Why AutoShippingUS

Why San Antonio drivers choose AutoShippingUS

  • PCS moves planned around the report date

The JBSA gates have lots and hours of their own. Your report date goes on the booking, the handover outside the gate is agreed when the truck is assigned, and dates move with your orders at no charge.

  • Where two interstates cross

I-10 and I-35 meet here, so California, Florida, Phoenix and Dallas trucks all pass through. We schedule a San Antonio pickup as a stop on a passing load and quote the short window that goes with it, even in the summer crunch.

  • Carrier discounts asked for, not assumed

Some carriers discount active-duty and veteran shipments. Your specialist asks the assigned carrier before dispatch and applies whatever it offers, rather than promising a discount we cannot guarantee.
